Ms. Jessica Ekira Kara Gondwe was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, when her father was teaching at the University of Manitoba. Her father, the late Professor Derrick Gondwe was from Malawi, and her mother is from USA. He is the brother to Mr. Goodall Gondwe.
As soon as Professor Gondwe finished his PhD at the University of Manitoba, the family moved back to the U.S. where they settled in a small, rural town in Pennsylvania. It is where Jessica received her early schooling. Her father joined the faculty at Gettysburg College as Professor of Economics. Jessica graduated from Gettysburg Area High School in 1994 and had spent many hours during these early years pursuing her first love of dancing.
She continued dancing locally and regionally. It was while employed as a dancer in Broadway productions in the area that she discovered her extraordinary singing talent. Jessica Gondwe studied with members of the vocal faculty at Peabody Conservatory as well as with Dr. Nathan Carter, the former Director of the Morgan State University Choir, a group well known to Gettysburg audiences. Dr. Carter awarded her a scholarship to pursue vocal studies and she was a member of this famed choir for a number of years. She graduated with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Modern Dance from the University of the Arts, in Philadelphia, PA.
Jessica Gondwe has been a soloist with the Sight and Sound Theatre in Lancaster as well as having a leading role in the production of “Battle Cry.” Battle Cry is a premiere musical covering the American Civil War era. This Broadway musical was directed by the New York based team of Gabriel Berry and composer Paul Bogave.
